Grand Rapids one day before ArtPrize.  It’s pretty peaceful.  I’ll have to go back to the same place and get the same shots and show the difference when ArtPrize going on.

Went into town today.  Had some tea at Rosa Parks Circle.  Took pictures of people.

Starting a street photography set on flickr

Always bothers me when fellow photographers say—sorry, can’t tell you, it’s a secret.  Seriously, it’s not like I’m asking you to tell me last detail and angle about your photograph!  I asked someone today—hey, did you use a softbox or not?  Wouldn’t answer me like I was going to steal his style.  If there’s one thing I know, it’s that good photographers suck when they try to mimic other people’s style.

There’s really nothing secretive about a successful photograph.  Take a technique and apply it badly, you’ve missed your mark.  Someone can use your technique, but you know what—they’ll burn out because they don’t have creative spirit.  Don’t fear when people copy you, that means that you discovered something good.  So keep discovering, keep trying new things.  Keep failing, eventually you’ll succeed.

Ending this rant on a good note, it’s my birthday today.  I’m 21.

I’m not sure why it is, it’s just incredibly hard to find guys that like their picture being taken.  Matt is a natural.  95º heat at noon, probably the worst time to take pictures, but we did it, and go a few couples shots too.
